The Verge reports that Will Cathcart, the head of WhatsApp, says that the company would love to make a version of the app for the iPad. He also says that it has been something that’s been requested for a long time. No surprise there, as various iterations of the iPad have had a SIM slot, and as a result, support for mobile data. Cathcart adds that the rollout of the multi-device support for WhatsApp will be the key for an iPad version of the app to work. So as far as underlying tech is concerned, things are already in place. All that remains is for the feature to be out of beta and be a generally available feature. As it is now, users will have to opt-in or out of the test to make use of it. While the report mentions specifically the Apple iPad family of tablets, it’s entirely possible that the WhatsApp app will also be coming to Android tablets. It would be a strange omission otherwise. All that being said, Cathcart has provided no dates as to when this will actually happen. One can imagine that, at its earliest, it would come slightly after multi-device gets out of beta.
