Uploaded by serial leakster IceUniverse on Twitter is a short video clip featuring what appears to be a prototype smartphone that features a colour-changing rear case. The case starts off in dark blue colour, which gradually changes into metallic grey or silver. Based on our observation, this cool effect is likely triggered manually. You can see two instances in the video when its colour begins to shift after the user presses the side of the phone, where the lock button is usually located.
— Ice universe (@UniverseIce) September 3, 2020 The leakster did not reveal how the video was acquired nor specified the company responsible for this colour-changing rear case technology. Instead, he simply noted that it is developed by a “mobile phone brand”. Users replying to IceUniverse’s tweet threw in their speculations, with some even claiming the tech belongs to companies such as OnePlus, Huawei or Nubia. Until it is officially confirmed by a smartphone brand, we can’t know for sure who actually owns this new tech. Interestingly enough, XDA editor Mishaal Rahman pointed out that the colour-changing case is using Electrochromic glass technology. He also noted that it is the same technology used to hide the rear cameras on the OnePlus Concept One smartphone that was demonstrated at CES2020 earlier this year.
It is unknown when this new colour-changing technology would debut in the market but chances are, it could be part of an upcoming flagship smartphone by one of the major brands. If not this year, then perhaps in 2021 and beyond. Not forgetting that this new device may likely come with a hefty price tag as well. But regardless, this new tech definitely looks cool.
