According to The Fast Company, Apple will be using Intel’s 8161 5G modem, which in turn are to be built on the former’s 10nm SoC lineup. Despite the change of heart, what hasn’t change is Apple overall mood with Intel. Apple is not happy with the semiconductor maker, mainly due to the latter’s curent 8060 modem chips that are currently in testing. Specifically, the aforementioned modem chips suffer from a heat dissipation issue. However, it’s every unlikely that this issue will force Apple to go crawling back to Qualcomm for help on the issue. Given the two company’s on-going warring status.

Moving on, Apple is still set on its 2020 release for its new iPhones with 5G modems. In that case, it’s also evident that it won’t be the first company to release a 5G capable mobile device. Especially since some Android smartphone makers are expected to launch their own smartphones with 5G connectivity as early as 2019. (Source: The Fast Company via Hot Hardware)
