The alleged rumours stem from a video report posted on a YouTube channel named Residence of Evil. On top of the return of the first-person mode, the rumours also seem to suggest that Ethan Winters – the original protagonist from RE7 – will be making a return to RE8, alongside boulder-punching veteran, Chris Redfield. Of course, to what extent their roles are in the unreleased RE8 is still unknown. While this is all just hearsay at the moment, it does seem a little odd that Capcom would still want to stick with the first-person viewing angle for RE8; both the current Resident Evil 2 Remake and upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake saw the comeback of the third-person mode, quite likely as a homage to the original title that launched more than a decade ago. That said, it’s likely that Capcom is choosing to stick with the gameplay mode for a couple more new Resident Evil titles. Both as a way to set them apart from the remakes, and to keep things fresh. On another note, the YouTube channel is also quick to point out that it is possible that the RE8 title may just be a placeholder. According to sources close to the channel, the next instalment will have a “clever title”, instead of going by the usual numerical route. As Capcom has done for the last several titles.
Once again, these are just speculations and rumours at this stage, so we do advise you to take them with a very liberal dose of scepticism. At least, until any official announcement by Capcom. (Source: YouTube via Eurogamer // Image: Polygon)
