It was also reported that Idris Elba is set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, while Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn’s involvement in the movie remains uncertain. Along with the Idris Elba announcement, there were also a couple of credible news sites that reported that Gunn would be introducing a bunch of new characters such as King Shark and Polka-Dot Man. Guess what? It looks like Jai Courtney is set to reprise his role as Captain Boomerang too. Say what?! In a chat with Business Insider, the Australian actor said he will be returning to the DCEU to play Captain Boomerang in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
I’ll be honest, a lot of these reports seem to contradict one another and most of it doesn’t quite add up. But let’s just try to make sense of it shall we? Perhaps instead of a ‘total reboot’ as suggested by Peter Safran, this would be more of a soft reboot that’s technically a sequel to Ayer’s Suicide Squad but also not quite. Idris Elba could just be a recast of the Deadshot character, similar to Mark Ruffalo/Edward Norton in the MCU and Maggie Gyllenhaal/Katie Holmes in Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. As far as Captain Boomerang is concerned, he could very well bite the bullet in one of the early scenes much like Slipknot in the original Suicide Squad. Directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad is set to hit theatres in August 2021. (Source: Business Insider)
