As some of you might have expected, the IBM POWER10 CPU is designed for the enterprise market just like all IBM products these days. This particular chip is primarily meant to cater to the hybrid cloud computing segment which in other words, data centres.
According to the company, the new CPU is designed to deliver improvements of up to three times in terms of capacity and processor energy efficiency when compared to its predecessor, the POWER9. One of the main factors behind this improvement is the fact that the POWER10 is built using 7nm processing technology. IBM also said that the POWER10 CPU can deliver faster encryption performance since the amount of AES encryption engines per core have been quadrupled as compared to the previous POWER9 chip. Aside from that, the POWER10 also features a new technology that IBM called Memory Inception that allows POWER10-based systems in a cluster to access and share each other’s memory. IBM also stated that the embedded Matrix Math Accelerator inside the CPU could help deliver up to 20x faster AI inference than its predecessor. Since IBM does not operate its own chip foundry, the company relies on Samsung to manufacture POWER10 for it. The new CPU is expected to be featured on servers that are going to be deployed into the market within the second half of 2021.
