The new Selfie Series is a collaboration between the toy company and 3D printing specialist Formlabs. According to the latter’s CEO and co-founder Max Lobovsky, this partnership is in line with its growing project to turn 3D printing into a viable way of making customised, mass-market products. “3D printing has long been viewed as a prototyping tool, but the Hasbro Selfie Series personalization platform demonstrates that Formlabs enables end-product manufacturing at scale,” he said. Meanwhile, Hasbro head of global design and development Brian Chapman explained that the idea also spawned from a well received contest that the company held a few years ago during Comic Con, which rewarded winners with personalised action figures. Due to the enormous interest in the promo, Hasbro then decided to set its sights to the 3D printing market. The process of getting a custom six-inch toy with your face attached to it is pretty simple and straightforward. Simply download the Hasbro Pulse app for Android or iOS devices, scan your face using the built-in Selfie Series camera feature, choose your desired character, and then select a hairstyle. Based on the images provided, it appears that you can provide any kind of facial expression for your custom figure. According to the company, available characters include Star Wars’ The Mandalorian, Stormtrooper, X-Wing Pilot, and Princess Leia; G.I. Joe’s Snake Eyes and Scarlett; male and female Ghostbusters outfits (with customisable name badges); Red and Pink rangers from Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers; and Marvel’s Spider-Man, Black Widow, Iron Man, and Black Panther. These figures are offered with their own respective accessories and packaging. Now, before you scramble to follow all of the steps mentioned above, be informed that the Selfie Series isn’t launched just yet. Hasbro says the new line is slated to debut later in fall this year and, here’s the kicker, it is only available to the US region. Unfortunately, it is not known whether the toy company is planning to expand this service to other countries, but keep your fingers crossed just in case. Getting a custom action figure featuring your own face for US$ 60 (not including sales tax and shipping fees) is actually a pretty decent deal. And should Hasbro allow you to scan a friend or family member’s likeness, the Selfie Series would be an excellent gift for them – especially if they’re already big fans of the aforementioned franchises that are participating in this new series.
