Sources to CNBC say that the glasses are internally codenamed Orion, and are designed to be able to replace smartphones. In addition to displaying information, they would allow wearers to take calls and live stream their vantage point to social media.
Facebook has reportedly struggled to reduce the size of the smart glasses to one that consumers will find appealing. This led to the partnership with Luxottica, which owns luxury brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley. Luxottica has also worked with Google back in 2014 on the Google Glass, so it has experience with making smart eye-wear. With the partnership, the Facebook hopes to get Orion ready for consumers between 2023 and 2025. (Source: CNBC)
