To be precise, Facebook’s actually got the Oculus team working on a few designs, with the hopes that a potential successor will appear within them. To that end, it’s safe to say that we won’t be expecting a new VR headset from the brand anytime soon. The Oculus Quest was first announced back in 2018. The headset serves as a direct successor to the Oculus Go and much like its predecessor, the headset can run VR independently. Without the need to be tethered to a smartphone or PC. Of course, if that’s what you’re looking for, there’s also the Oculus Rift S, which does require a connection to a PC.
In addition to a new Quest headset, Facebook is also said to be working on a redesigned controller for it. Specifically, one that is more comfortable when held, along with a battery cover that doesn’t accidentally slide off. As it stands, Facebook is keeping mum on a possible launch date for the new Quest VR headset. It had intended to launch it sometime this year, but considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it’s very likely we’ll only see something close to a working sample as early as next year.
