During the media briefing by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) yesterday, its Chief Digital Officer, Gerard Lim revealed that the self-driving car will be used as part of the launch ceremony in which Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir will be transported to the venue with the car. Of course, the distance involved would not be very far given the nature of the localized 5G network that was installed at the event. We were informed that the car is an unnamed Proton model that has Level 3 autonomy which is also known as Conditional Automation according to the SAE J3016 standard. This means that the vehicle has a high level of autonomy, but the driver still needs to be ready to intervene, if the vehicle calls for it. Judging from the presentation slide above, visitors to the showcase will also be able to remotely drive the car as well, from the comfort of Celcom’s booth. According to Celcom, the telco chooses to showcase autonomous car in order to demonstrate the ultra-reliability and lower latency nature of the 5G network. However, it is just one of the as Celcom will also demonstrate including connected drone, real-time holographic video conference, immersive conference through fixed wireless access, live 4K VR experience for multiple users, and real-time VR gaming.
