However, the report which was based on an interview with the CEO of Astro, Henry Tan, stated that contents from other companies including rival streaming services may appear on it as well. This is because Astro is also trying to position itself as a “super aggregator” of digital contents which is something that we have heard before.
The report by Nikkei also pointed out that Astro is relying on its knowledge on the Malaysian market as well as its massive customer, marketing, and sales reach in order to attract other content providers. Henry has apparently revealed that new partnerships – both exclusive and nonexclusive – will be announced very soon which will greatly expand its content partner list that currently includes HBO Asia and IQIYI.
Interesting enough, the new streaming service will not carry Astro’s branding which is a rather odd decision since Astro is a well-known name among Malaysians.
