Funnily enough, Dillard was also involved in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. He first worked together with JJ Abrams as part of the production and technical support team on The Force Awakens. In The Rise of Skywalker, Dillard donned a Stormtrooper armour in a cameo appearance. This is exciting news as it marks the first time a Star Wars live-action project will be helmed by a person of colour. I don’t think it’s crazy to speculate that with Dillard seated at the director’s chair, we could potentially be getting a SW film with a black lead, something many of us have been clamouring for. That said, I think we shouldn’t get too excited about anything just yet. Star Wars is in a weird phase right now as Lucasfilm regroups and maps out the future of the galaxy far far away. We know that SW will be on a big-screen hiatus until 2022, but we still have no idea what the 2022 movie is going to be. We also know that Rian Johnson and Kevin Feige are developing SW projects as well. On top of that, Disney has also mentioned that their primary focus right now, as far as SW is concerned in developing stuff for Disney+. The first season of The Mandalorian has been a massive success. There’s also the Cassian Andor and Obi-Wan series in the works right now. On second thought, perhaps now is exactly the best time to be excited about Star Wars.
